About Playgroup and our data
Playgroup is a free Magic: The Gathering Commander game tracker and an in-browser virtual tabletop. Every statistic published on this site comes from one place: the 620,000+ Commander games people have recorded here. This page explains what that data is, how it is collected, and how the numbers are made.
Paper games logged in the tracker app, and online games recorded on Playgroup Live.
Rates and distributions over many games. Never an individual player's history.
Casual and mid-power Commander tables, not competitive tournament play.
What Playgroup is
Playgroup is a free Commander game tracker for Android, iOS, and the web. Players open it at the table and log the paper games they are already playing: who sat down, which commander each player brought, who won, and how the game ended. Groups use it for their own win rates, deck records, and leaderboards.
Playgroup Live, the in-browser virtual tabletop, is the same platform. Games played there are recorded by the same system into the same tables as paper games. One platform, one dataset, one set of definitions behind every number on this site.
620,000+ recorded Commander games
The corpus is every finished Commander game recorded on Playgroup since the site launched. It grows every day, and it is collected two ways. In-person games are logged through the tracker app by the people playing them. Online games are recorded as they happen on Playgroup Live, where the board itself knows what was played.
In July 2026, 7,281 Commander games were finished on Playgroup Live by 2,916 players. That is the most recent full calendar month, and it is a subset of the total above.
Nothing in the corpus is scraped from deck-building sites, bought from a third party, or extrapolated from a survey. Every row is a game somebody actually sat down and recorded. When a figure cannot be counted, it is not published.
How the statistics are made
Published statistics are counts, rates, and distributions taken over many games and many players. No page exposes an individual player's games, decks, or results. A player's own history stays between them and their playgroup.
A small sample is either flagged as provisional or held back entirely. Where win rates are ranked, the ranking uses a confidence-adjusted bound rather than the raw rate, so a lucky four-game run cannot beat a proven hundred-game one. A page hides a number rather than invents one.
Card statistics recompute nightly, with a full resweep once a week. Commander pages, the tier list, and the land study refresh daily. Turn-order statistics and the staples lists refresh weekly. Metagame reports are published monthly.
What this data is not
-
Card-level play data is Live only. What was cast, when it was cast, and which zone a card moved between is recorded only for the Playgroup Live subset, because a paper game logged at the table records the result rather than every action. Deck-level data and win rates cover the whole corpus.
-
It is not cEDH or tournament data. Playgroup is used almost entirely for casual and mid-power Commander. The numbers describe how those tables actually play, which is the point, but they should not be read as a competitive Commander metagame.
-
It is a sample, not a census. The corpus describes the players who use Playgroup. It is large enough to be informative and it is honest about its own uncertainty, but no tracker sees every Commander game ever played.
