The short answer

What are the most fun commanders in MTG?

The most fun Commanders to pilot right now are Grolnok, the Omnivore (4.17), Nathan Drake, Treasure Hunter (4.08), and Gluntch, the Bestower (4.05), based on tracked games from the last 90 days. Every Commander game is rated 1 to 5 by the player who piloted the deck, right after they finish playing. Because winners always rate their games higher, the score standardizes to a neutral win rate: it averages the fun on won and lost games separately, then weights the losing side more heavily, so winning does not buy fun points.

How we measure fun

The method, in plain language

  • Pilots rate their own game 1 to 5 right after playing, so this measures fun to PILOT a commander, not to play against one.
  • Winners rate games higher: across tracked games the average is 4.32 out of 5 when a pilot wins versus 3.46 when they lose, a gap of 0.85 stars. A raw fun average would just re-rank commanders by win rate.
  • To strip out that bonus we average the winning-game and losing-game ratings separately, then combine them as 0.25 times the winning average plus 0.75 times the losing average. Weighting the losing side more heavily standardizes every commander to a neutral outcome.
  • A commander needs at least 100 fun ratings in the last 90 days from at least 10 distinct pilots to be ranked. If either side has fewer than 10 ratings we substitute the site-wide average for that side.
  • Honest caveat: this is self-reported, and players who skip rating can bias the sample. It reflects how the people who did rate felt about piloting the deck.
  • Card names and artwork come from Scryfall. The ratings themselves are not sourced from anywhere: every game result and fun rating on this page is Playgroup.gg's own first-party data, recorded by players in our game tracker.
  • Computed 13 Jul 2026 and refreshed every 6 hours.

Most Fun Commanders FAQ

What is the most fun commander in MTG right now?
By player fun ratings in the last 90 days, Grolnok, the Omnivore is the most fun commander to pilot on Playgroup.gg, with an outcome-standardized fun score of 4.17 out of 5. Pilots rate every game 1 to 5 after playing, and the score is adjusted to a neutral win rate so a commander cannot climb just by winning more.
How is commander fun measured?
After each tracked game, the player piloting a deck rates how much fun it was from 1 to 5. We average those ratings for the commander's won games and lost games separately, then combine them as 0.25 times the winning average plus 0.75 times the losing average. Winners always rate games higher, so weighting the losing side more heavily strips out the winner bonus and leaves fun that does not depend on the result.
Does winning make Commander games more fun?
Yes, clearly. Across tracked games, pilots rate their winning games 4.32 out of 5 on average versus 3.46 when they do not win, a gap of 0.85 stars. That is exactly why this ranking standardizes to a neutral outcome instead of using a raw fun average.
What commander is the most fun even when losing?
Grolnok, the Omnivore keeps games the most fun in defeat, with an average losing-game fun rating of 4.02 out of 5 in the last 90 days, among commanders with enough losing games to measure.
Why is a commander I like not on the list?
This page shows the top 100. A commander needs at least 100 fun ratings in the last 90 days from at least 10 distinct pilots to qualify, and the floors keep a single pod from pushing a pet deck up the rankings. A commander can clear both gates and still rank below the display cutoff. Every commander's own fun rating is shown on its commander page.
