Playgroup.gg ranks 515 commanders into five tiers by win rate across 24,142 tracked casual Commander games from the last 30 days. The first Commander tier list based on real gameplay data, not opinions or deck registrations.

Tiers are assigned by win rate in the rolling 30-day window. Win rates are normalized to a 4-player baseline (25% expected) so games with different pod sizes are weighted fairly. A commander needs at least 40 tracked games to qualify, and those games must come from at least 10 distinct registered pilots so a single playgroup cannot dominate the ranking. Data comes from games recorded playing paper magic through the Playgroup.gg app and online games played with Playgroup Live. Win rates are calculated from both registered-deck and guest-commander participations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Playgroup.gg Commander tier list calculated?

Every commander with at least 40 tracked games and at least 10 distinct registered pilots in the last 30 days is ranked by normalized win rate. Win rates are adjusted to a 4-player baseline (25% expected) so a win in a 2-player game and a win in a 5-player game are weighted fairly. Commanders scoring 35% or more are S-tier; 30-35% are A-tier; 23-30% are B-tier; 18-23% are C-tier; and below 18% are D-tier.

What does each tier mean?

S-tier commanders win roughly 40% more games than expected. A-tier wins about 20-40% above expected. B-tier is near the statistical baseline. C-tier is below average. D-tier commanders score below 18%, significantly under the 25% baseline. All values are normalized across pod sizes.

How often is the Commander tier list updated?

The data refreshes every 6 hours. Because it uses a rolling 30-day window, tiers shift gradually as new games are recorded and old ones age out.

Why is my commander not on the tier list?

A commander needs at least 40 tracked games in the last 30 days, and those games must come from at least 10 different registered pilots. The pilot diversity floor stops a single playgroup or grinder from skewing the ranking with their pet deck. You can still see all-time stats on any commander's individual page.

How is this different from EDHREC rankings or other tier lists?

EDHREC ranks by deck popularity, counting how many people register a commander. Other tier lists like Draftsim are based on editorial opinion. Playgroup.gg ranks by actual game win rates across thousands of casual Commander games tracked through the Playgroup.gg app and Playgroup Live each month.
