Methodology
Last Updated

Precons are ranked by win rate across games played with the stock, unmodified decklist. A deck counts as stock when its non-basic card list exactly matches the precon, so basic-land swaps and printing differences are ignored. Win rates are normalized to a 4-player baseline (25% expected) so games with different pod sizes are weighted fairly. A precon needs at least 20 tracked stock games from at least 10 distinct registered pilots to qualify, so a single playgroup cannot dominate the ranking. Most precons land at or below the 25% line, exactly what you would expect from an out-of-the-box deck, so the higher tiers mark the precons that overperform before any upgrades. Data comes from games tracked through the Playgroup.gg app and online games played with Playgroup Live.

Frequently Asked

What is the best Commander precon?
By win rate across games played with the unmodified decklist, the strongest preconstructed Commander decks on Playgroup.gg are Avengers Assemble (36.7%), Lorehold Spirit (35.42%), and Dance of the Elements (33.72%). These are real win rates from stock games, normalized to a 4-player baseline (25% expected).
How is the Commander precon tier list calculated?
Every precon with at least 20 tracked games played with its stock (unmodified) decklist, from at least 10 distinct registered pilots, is ranked by pod-size-normalized win rate. A deck counts as stock when its non-basic card list exactly matches the precon's; basic-land and printing differences are ignored. Precons scoring 35% or more are S-tier; 30-35% are A-tier; 23-30% are B-tier; 18-23% are C-tier; and below 18% are D-tier.
Are Commander precons worth buying?
Most stock precons sit at or just below the 25% win rate expected in a 4-player pod, which is what you would expect from an out-of-the-box deck facing upgraded ones. The tiers show which precons punch above their weight before any changes, so they are a useful read on which box to buy for the most competitive starting point.
Do upgrades make a precon better?
Surprisingly, our tracked data does not show a clear win-rate gain from modifying a precon while keeping its core, so this list ranks the decks exactly as they come in the box. Card-level power is measured separately through the official Game Changers list, where high-power cards push a deck into a higher bracket.
Why isn't a precon on this list?
A precon needs at least 20 tracked games played with its stock list, from at least 10 different registered pilots, before it can be ranked. Newer or less-played precons are still gathering data, and we only rank precons whose full decklist we have on file.
How is this different from EDHREC?
EDHREC ranks cards and commanders by how often they appear in registered decklists; it has no game-outcome data. Playgroup.gg ranks precons by actual win rate from real tracked games played with the stock decklist, which no other site can do.
