Tales of Middle-earth FAQ

When did the Tales of Middle-earth Commander decks release?
The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth released on June 23, 2023. The set codes are LTR for the main set and LTC for the four Commander precon decks.
What are the four Tales of Middle-earth Commander precons?
Riders of Rohan (Jeskai) led by Éowyn, Shieldmaiden; Food and Fellowship (Abzan) led by the partners Frodo, Adventurous Hobbit and Sam, Loyal Attendant; Elven Council (Simic) led by Galadriel, Elven-Queen; and The Hosts of Mordor (Grixis) led by Sauron, Lord of the Rings.
What does 'the Ring tempts you' do?
Each time the Ring tempts you, you choose a creature you control as your Ring-bearer and your Ring emblem gains its next ability, in order: the bearer is legendary and hard to block, attacking with it loots a card, blockers that stop it get sacrificed, and finally its combat damage drains each opponent for 3. Food and Fellowship and The Hosts of Mordor both use the mechanic.
Which Tales of Middle-earth precon is best for new Commander players?
Riders of Rohan. Play a Human each turn, and Éowyn refills the board with hasty Knight tokens while drawing you cards; the go-wide plan is easy to pilot. Food and Fellowship is a close second with an intuitive lifegain-and-Food theme.
Can I playtest the Tales of Middle-earth precons before buying?
Yes. Every precon on this page has a one-click Playtest in Playgroup Live button. Click it, sign in if needed, and you land in a fresh solo game with the Archidekt decklist already imported.
Are the Tales of Middle-earth cards Standard legal?
No. The main LTR set is Modern legal (and legal in Legacy, Vintage, and Commander), while the Commander-only cards in the LTC precon decks are legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage.
