Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Playgroup.gg metagame report?

Each monthly report captures the Commander metagame across thousands of casual games tracked through Playgroup.gg. Reports cover win rates, most-played commanders, monthly risers and fallers, community sentiment (saltiest and most-fun commanders), color identity performance, and a Meta Diversity Index.

How often are metagame reports published?

Monthly. A new report is published within the first week of the following month, once the previous month's game data is complete. Older reports stay online as an archive so month-over-month trends remain readable.

What is the Meta Diversity Index (MDI)?

The Meta Diversity Index uses Shannon entropy on a 0 to 100 scale to measure how evenly commanders are distributed across a month's games. A score of 100 means every commander sees equal play. Below 70 indicates a few commanders dominate the month.

Where does the data come from?

Every finished multiplayer Commander game tracked through the Playgroup.gg mobile app and Playgroup Live, the in-browser virtual tabletop. No proxy data, no tournament results, no deck-registration popularity counts. Win rates are normalized to a 4-player baseline (25% expected) so pod size differences are weighted fairly.

How is this different from EDHREC or EDHTop16?

EDHREC ranks commanders by deck registrations. EDHTop16 tracks competitive tournament finishes. Playgroup.gg reports the outcomes of actual casual games: win rates, game length, community sentiment, and how the meta shifts month over month.
