What should a Commander deck look like?

It looks like a range, not a recipe. For every category on this page half of the decks in a given colour identity sit inside the band and half sit outside it, so a count under the band is a question to ask about your list, never a mistake to correct.

What makes ours different is where the numbers come from. They are measured from decks people record real games with on Playgroup, split by colour identity because the categories move so much between colours, and rebuilt every week. Identities with too few tracked decks are left unpublished rather than guessed at.

Deck template FAQ

Is the band a rule?

No. It is where half of the decks in your colours sit. Being under it is a thing to look at, not a mistake, and being over it is not wrong either. A mono-blue deck with eleven counterspells is on purpose.

Why per colour identity instead of one template for everyone?

Because the data would not let us do otherwise. Mono-blue decks run far more counterspells than two-colour blue decks, and decks without blue run none at all. One global band would be wrong on most rows, so we measure each colour identity separately.

Where do the numbers come from?

From decks people track games with on Playgroup, not from decks that only exist on a deck site. Half-built piles and anonymous pastes are left out, so a popular list cannot vote a hundred times. We rebuild the bands every week.

Can I check a deck without an account?

Yes. The checker is free and needs no account. We do not save your list, and opening it in the brew tool afterwards makes a guest deck that lives in your browser, which you can claim later if you want to keep it.

How do I fix the gaps?

Open the list in the brew tool from the button under your report. The deck lands in the editor with the same categories along the top, the thin ones marked, and the cards other decks in your colours play for that category one click away.
